Meta (Robotics)

Meta's humanoid robotics group, building robot AI and its own humanoid; its CTO says software is the bottleneck

Division of Meta Platforms · Prototype · Robot foundation model · Menlo Park, California, United States · Founded 2025 · meta.com

Part of Meta Platforms, Inc.

Profile

Meta's humanoid group, Meta Robotics Studio, began in Reality Labs in 2025. Andrew Bosworth, Meta's CTO, told The Verge in September 2025 that humanoids are Meta's next "AR-size bet" and that "The bottleneck is the software." He said Meta is building its own humanoid and plans to license the software. Meta says it acquired Assured Robot Intelligence in May 2026; its team, led by Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang, joined Meta Superintelligence Labs. The Information reported in October 2026 that Meta built a prototype, Max, with Shanghai's Fourier. Meta told the outlet the work is for internal research. Marc Whitten, the group's first VP of robotics, left in August 2026 to become Dolby's CEO.

Notes A division of Meta Platforms with no separate funding; Meta's own financials are not shown because this entry covers only its robotics work. Meta has not shown a robot publicly. The Max and Max 2 prototypes with Fourier come only from The Information's October 31, 2026 report citing people familiar with the project; Reuters could not immediately verify it. The founding year is when the robotics group was set up (2025); Meta itself was founded in 2004. The headquarters shown is Meta's (Menlo Park).
